Why Your Startup Needs a Design System (Sooner Than You Think)

A design system isn't a luxury for big companies. For a startup it's the difference between shipping fast and shipping chaos.

Why Your Startup Needs a Design System (Sooner Than You Think)

The hidden tax of "just this once"

Every one-off button, spacing tweak and hard-coded color is a small loan against your future velocity. Individually they're invisible. Collectively they become the reason a "quick change" takes a week.

Tokens first

A design system starts with tokens — the atomic decisions about color, type, spacing and radius. Get these into code once and every component inherits them for free. Change a token, change the whole product.

Components as contracts

A good component encodes a decision so nobody has to make it again. The team stops debating padding and starts debating what actually matters: the product.

When to start

The honest answer: as soon as two people are writing UI. It doesn't need to be elaborate — a handful of tokens and five well-built components will save you months by your Series A.
